How do I install the solar enclosure and panel into my WWVDS system?
This article discusses solar panel installation instructions into a WWVDS system.
Follow the steps below to install the GC-ENC-SW Solar Enclosure as part of the GovComm WWVDS system.
- Install the Solar Panel
- The selected location where the solar panel would be installed needs to receive direct, unobstructed sunlight throughout the day (facing south).
- Avoid shading from trees, buildings, signs, poles, equipment, or other obstructions, particularly during the main solar-production hours.
- Orient and tilt the solar panel according to the site's geographic location to maximize solar exposure.
- Attach the solar panel bracket to the top of the pole using the provided mounting straps.
- Make sure the bracket and panel are securely fastened to the pole and that the panel is positioned to receive maximum available sunlight.
- Install the Solar Enclosure
- Mount the GC-ENC-SW on the middle section of the pole.
- Position the enclosure so that it remains accessible from a ladder for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
- Securely fasten the enclosure to the pole using the provided mounting hardware.
- Connect the Solar Panel to the Enclosure
- Use the provided 10 ft, 2-conductor, 14 AWG cable to connect the solar panel to the GC-ENC-SW.
- Connect the cable from the small junction box on the solar panel to the terminals inside the enclosure labeled:
- SP+ → Solar Panel Positive (+)
- SP- → Solar Panel Negative (-)
- Verify the polarity before making the connection.
- Secure the cable along the pole and ensure it is protected from damage, sharp edges, and excessive movement.
- Install the Wireless Antenna
- Use the provided antenna extension cable to relocate the wireless antenna higher on the pole.
- Mount the provided antenna near the top of the pole using the standoff holder.
- Position the antenna so it has a clear line of sight to the corresponding wireless equipment.
- Secure the antenna and cable to prevent movement or damage from wind and weather.
- Install and Connect the Battery
- Verify that the provided battery is securely positioned inside the GC-ENC-SW enclosure.
- Make sure the battery cannot move or become disconnected due to vibration or other environmental conditions.
- Connect the battery's positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to the corresponding battery connectors inside the enclosure.
- Connect the Wrong-Way Sign
- Connect the sign cable to the terminals inside the enclosure labeled:
- SIGN+
- SIGN-
- Verify that the positive and negative conductors are connected to the correct terminals.
- Secure the sign cable along the pole and ensure it is protected from environmental and mechanical damage.
- Connect the sign cable to the terminals inside the enclosure labeled:
