How do I install the solar enclosure and panel into my WWVDS system?

This article discusses solar panel installation instructions into a WWVDS system.

Follow the steps below to install the GC-ENC-SW Solar Enclosure as part of the GovComm WWVDS system.

  1. Install the Solar Panel
    1. The selected location where the solar panel would be installed needs to receive direct, unobstructed sunlight throughout the day (facing south).
    2. Avoid shading from trees, buildings, signs, poles, equipment, or other obstructions, particularly during the main solar-production hours.
    3. Orient and tilt the solar panel according to the site's geographic location to maximize solar exposure.
    4. Attach the solar panel bracket to the top of the pole using the provided mounting straps.
    5. Make sure the bracket and panel are securely fastened to the pole and that the panel is positioned to receive maximum available sunlight.
  2. Install the Solar Enclosure
    1. Mount the GC-ENC-SW on the middle section of the pole.
    2. Position the enclosure so that it remains accessible from a ladder for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    3. Securely fasten the enclosure to the pole using the provided mounting hardware.
  3. Connect the Solar Panel to the Enclosure
    1. Use the provided 10 ft, 2-conductor, 14 AWG cable to connect the solar panel to the GC-ENC-SW.
    2. Connect the cable from the small junction box on the solar panel to the terminals inside the enclosure labeled:
      1. SP+ → Solar Panel Positive (+)
      2. SP- → Solar Panel Negative (-)
    3. Verify the polarity before making the connection.
    4. Secure the cable along the pole and ensure it is protected from damage, sharp edges, and excessive movement.
  4. Install the Wireless Antenna
    1. Use the provided antenna extension cable to relocate the wireless antenna higher on the pole.
    2. Mount the provided antenna near the top of the pole using the standoff holder.
    3. Position the antenna so it has a clear line of sight to the corresponding wireless equipment.
    4. Secure the antenna and cable to prevent movement or damage from wind and weather.
  5. Install and Connect the Battery
    1. Verify that the provided battery is securely positioned inside the GC-ENC-SW enclosure.
    2. Make sure the battery cannot move or become disconnected due to vibration or other environmental conditions.
    3. Connect the battery's positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to the corresponding battery connectors inside the enclosure.
  6. Connect the Wrong-Way Sign
    1. Connect the sign cable to the terminals inside the enclosure labeled:
      1. SIGN+
      2. SIGN-
    2. Verify that the positive and negative conductors are connected to the correct terminals.
    3. Secure the sign cable along the pole and ensure it is protected from environmental and mechanical damage.
